WHO CARES.

WHO CARES what the people think
Of my religious views.
While I survive, or swim, or sink,
I’ll claim the right to choose.

So if I’ve sense the truth to see,
I want nor need a Priest.
Can stand erect, in manhood free,
And with my Master feast.

WHO CARES if Priests should reprobate,
And curse me with a frown,
I will defy both Church and State,
And live their malice down.

WHO CARES what the Church folks say,
About the dress I wear;
They for my soul had better pray
That I for Heaven prepare.

WHO CARES for the revilers talk,
Who lap from slanders bowl,
While I pursue a Godly walk
And purify my soul.

WHO CARES if the rich deride
And sneer because I’m poor,
They may brought down in their pride
And beg from door to door.

I CARE for all that makes men good
For all that makes them wise,
And I am sure that if I could
I’d raise them to the skies.

The naked clothe, the hungry feed,
The thirsty, water give.
I’d satisfy man’s every need,
And have him love and live.

Philanthropy shall rule my life,
Good will to God and man,
and in a pure and manly strife
Reach Heaven IF I CAN.

Prayer and Our Founding Fathers

This is from 1888. I had no idea this argument had been going on for so long:

HISTORICAL FACTS.

Showing That the Founders of Our Government Were God-Fearing and Praying Men.

It seems as easy to believe bad things about a body of men, as it is to believe them about one man. Indeed, it is somewhat easier. For, if there is even a small portion of charity in our make-up, we will exercise it in favor of one whom we are afraid to slander, whereas we will receive and repeat the same story about a congregation, a convention, or a congress without fear or qualm. And if it is a body of dead men, their reputations are absolutely at our mercy. The classic exhortation, to speak nothing about the dead but praise, is rarely heeded after the first burst of post-mortem eulogy.

It is quite the custom for instance, to think and say that the members of the Continental Congress were not devout men, that they had no regard for prayer as an aid to their deliberations, that they did not take God into the account in discussing the measures and results of the revolution. This is an offense to all believers in a gracious Providence, and it is also a foul libel on the political fathers.

We are gratified, therefore, to note that the learned Judge Bacon, of Utica, N.Y., in a recent historical paper of great general value, has corrected this false and unjust estimate of the Continental Congress. He shows how, on the 7th of September, 1774, when the real business of the body was to begin, a formal request was made for an opening prayer by Rev. Mr. Duche and that gentleman was thanked by resolution for his “excellent” services.

This is more consideration than some modern assemblies show to the divine who invoke God’s blessing on their deliberations. Afterward that same Congress, at ten different times, appointed days for fasting and thanksgiving. The last order of that kind was voted late in October, 1781, when December 15 was declared a day for thanksgiving and prayer on account of Cornwallis’ final overthrow.

When that order was entered, a further evidence of devotion was given by Congress going in a body to the Dutch Lutheran church in Philadelphia, there “to return thanks to Almighty God for crowning the allied armies of the United States and France with success, by the surrender of the whole British army under the command of the Earl Cornwallis.”

Now let the reader call these historic facts to mind, the next time he hears it said that the founders of our Government were not God-fearing men; or that the foundations of the Republic were not laid in prayer.

A.P.A. WEDS A CATHOLIC.
Member of the Ohio “Inner Circle” Astonishes His Brethren.

Monday evening a wedding took place at Toledo, Ohio, that caused a genuine sensation in A.P.A. circles. The contracting parties were Joseph D. Batch, charter member of Council No.2, A.P.A., and of the order of Zodiacs, commonly called the “Inner Circle.” present state secretary of the A.P.A. order, and Miss Tessa Cracknel, a pronounced and devout Roman Catholic. Rev. Father Barry of the Church of the Good Shepard performed the ceremony. The groom says he will resign his position as state secretary of the A.P.A. and will withdraw from the local council.

AN AGGRESSIVE ORDER.
The A.P.A. Busy Propagating Their Ideas in This Country.

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 21 — The American Protective Association is putting forth every effort to increase its membership in this city. Two sets of circulars have been distributed here that clearly explain the purposes and workings of the order. One set of circulars was distributed quietly among the avowed opponents of the Roman Catholics and another secretly among those who have taken the obligations of the order. The first circular recites that the order is about two years old; that in that time it has grown to a million membership; that in certain Western cities every official from the mayor down is a member; that it is aggressive without financial benefits and political, yet non-partisan; that it is a secret order, fighting a secret foe — the Jesuits. The circular concludes:

“The charm of the order seems to be in the fact that it means fight. The members are sick of apathy and supineness so prevalent in Protestantism. Of Americans generally who allow Rome to trample in the dust their most cherished institutions without a word of protest; and allow the many tentacled monster to seize and control city after city without a murmur. This is the grand reaction; a revolution, if you will, and if properly guided and controlled it means the annihilation of the dominancy of the old parties in 1896 and a new political heaven and earth.”

The Mayor Got a Winchester

TOLEDO, O., Feb 24. — The suit heard in a local justice’s court of A.J. Rummel, dealer in firearms, against G.W. Ostrander and others, members of council No.2, of the A.P.A., has revealed the fact that among those who purchased Winchester rifles wherewith to repel an anticipated invasion by Catholics last Labor Day, was Mayor Major. Among others who obtained guns were Police Commissioner Doville, James W. Caldwell chairman of the Republican city committee, Workhouse Superintendent Brown, Joseph D. Batch, Joseph Doville, W.C. Harris, G. Ostrander, and George H. Jay Republican candidate for street commissioner.
